A Brief History of the Union

1903: Founding of the International Slate and Tile Roofers of America
Chartered by the American Federation of Labor on June 5, 1903.

1906: Formation of the INternational Brotherhood of OCmposition Roofers
Chartered by the AFL on Nov. 6, 1906.

1919: Merger to Form the United Slate, Tile and Composition Roofers, Damp and Waterproof Workers Association
The two unions merged in Pittsburgh after 13 years of independent but cooperative function.

1937: Formation of Local Union No. 142
United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers chartered in Des Moines, Iowa.

Post-World War II Growth
The merged union expanded from 1,600 members to over 7,000 by World War II.

1950-1978: Steady Growth and Union Transformation
• Construction growth post-war led to a doubling of membership by 1950.
• By 1978, the union had 28,000 members.Construction growth post-war led to a doubling of membership by 1950.
• Adoption of the name "United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers."
• Approval of extensive constitution revisions and initiation of a praised health and safety program.Construction growth post-war led to a doubling of membership by 1950. -
2004: Creation of Marketing Department
The Marketing Department was established to support local affiliates in marketing, organizing, recruiting, member training, and leadership training.

2008: Roofers & Waterproofers Research and Education Joint Trust Fund
Established to enhance nationwide training capabilities and ensure safe and productive training for roofers and waterproofers.

2021: Launch of the National Instructor Training Program
The Trust launched the National Instructor Training Program, the first of its kind in the industry.

Present Day
Ongoing commitment to training, safety, and cooperation with a focus on providing the safest and best-trained roofers in the industry for signatory contractors.
